Day 1 – 2 Wildlife conservation at Na’an ku se Lodge

In the middle of the wild bushlands surrounding Namibia’s capital Windhoek lies a luxurious, unique not-for-profit ecolodge: Na’an ku se Lodge. Here all profits go to wildlife conservation and community development. The stunning lodge is crafted from ecologically clean material (including solid logs and glass) to complement its beautiful wilderness setting.

You will have the best introduction to fully enjoy the wildlife of the wild Kalahari Desert by learning about them before heading out into the wild. Upfront you might think this is interesting but trust us: once you’re out in the bush, you will appreciate all you experience and learn today!

The Naankuse Nature Reserve is all about conserving wild animals since it is also a rehabilitation centre for lions, leopards, wild dogs, baboons, caracals, and cheetahs. To keep them as wild as possible, human interactions are minimal. Absolutely no touching is allowed. Join a carnivore feeding tour, and you will learn all about the animals’ behaviour and their exciting stories of their histories from the local guides.

These guides are often San, the original bushmen of the Kalahari. During the Ancient San Skills Tour, you will spend time with a San family. Learn how they hunt, find food, water and medicine with traditional skills. Walk with them through the bush and learn traditional songs and dances.

Day 3 Windhoek city tour, game drive in Hardap NP

Windhoek is Africa’s small large city. The capital of Namibia sprawls over a large area, has all amenities, bars and restaurants, but not that many inhabitants. Windhoek has an interesting mix of historical architecture and modern buildings, many of which are worth a look, including the Alte Feste an old fort, the 1896 Christuskirche Christ Church, and the more contemporary Supreme Court.

After the city tour you will skirt the edge of the Kalahari Desert on your way to Mariental and the magnificent Hardap Dam, the largest reservoir in Namibia. It has breathed life into this arid terrain, which is now fertile with farmlands covered in citrus, melons, lucerne, wine and maize. And it’s time for your first game drive! In the Hardap NP you can spot rhino, ostrich, antelope, springbok and a variety of bird species.

Day 4 – 5 Quiver Tree Forest and the mighty Orange River

It’s a long but fast drive through the desert to the far south of Namibia, where the mighty Orange River forms the border with South Africa. Along the way you’ll stop at the scenic Quiver Tree Forest. These amazing trees grow only on certain black rock outcroppings and are actually not trees at all, but huge succulents. The San bushmen of the Kalahari used the bark of these trees to make quivers for their arrows, hence the name.

At the end of the day you reach the green lint of vegetation along the mighty Orange River, the largest river in this part of Africa.

Go a half or full day guided canoeing trip to see the wonder of a green river in a brown, red, grey and yellow coloured desert. Small shallow rapids and long lazy gliding river stretches take you between fantastically coloured rock formations and small mountains. This is not wild water, so even without any canoeing experience it’s a wonderful, relaxed experience.

Day 6 – 7 The marvelous Fish River Canyon

Carving out an epic rocky wonderland in the south of Namibia, the Fish River has created Africa’s largest – and the world’s second largest canyon after the Grand Canyon. Hot, dry and stony, the Fish River Canyon measures a whopping 160 kilometres in length, at times 27 kilometres in width and 550 metres in depth. The San people believe that in ancient times an enormous, godlike snake slithered through the Kalahari, carving out the canyon in the rocky floor of the desert. And in fact, the way the way the canyon snakes through the desert resembles the trail a snake would leave behind!

You overnight close to the edge of this awe-inspiring natural beauty. Explore the various viewpoints at leisure, each offering a different vista of the many curves of the might Fish River Canyon. Horse riding and extensive day walks are also possible, taking you down into the canyon. During the hottest months, November to April, walking into the canyon is not allowed, since temperatures inside the canyon can easily go up over 40 C.

Day 8 – 9 A ghost town and Wild desert horses

Along the cold Atlantic Ocean you find the small, isolated town of Lüderitz. Situated along a natural harbour, this is a quaint piece of 19th-century Bavaria bordering the pinkish sand dunes of the Namib Desert. Lutheran churches, German Konditoreis (bakeries) and colonial buildings boasting German art nouveau architecture are dotted about the settlement, while its windswept beaches are home to flamingos, ostriches, seals and penguins. Make a catamaran tour to Namibia’s only colony where you can see penguins in the wild.

Inland the desert sands are flowing over the ruins of Kolmanskop, once a thriving mining town. Now the old rambling houses and factory buildings are covered by the ever-moving desert sands. The result is a place where manmade and nature meet in harmony – a photographer’s paradise.  

Even further inland the Kalahari displays all its beauty in sheer endless sandy plains, distantly bordered by impressive mountain ridges. This is the home of the Wild horses of the Namib, who have managed to adapt to the harsh conditions. Their forebears were once in the service of man. Now they have gained freedom for themselves: a life in the vastness of the Namib, away from human civilization, according to the rules of their own horse society. You visit one of the waterholes where they come to drink.

Day 10 – 11 Wolwedans: the land of empty

Today a long drive takes you into the Namib desert, part of the much larger Kalahari desert. This is the land of empty. But never in your wildest dreams will you have imagined how incredibly stunning and beautiful emptiness can be. Endless plains are crossed by imposing mountain ranges. Bordering this area you find the highest sand dunes in the world. Despite the seemingly harsh conditions, this desert teems with wildlife. During your stay in Wolwedans Nature Reserve you will have ample opportunity to explore and discover this wildlife. And at night the most incredible sky forms your canopy. Your mind, your whole being will relax and you will not just see, but feel the immense power of the desert.  

Walking the Tok Tokkie trail

One of the many animals that live in the desert is the desert beetle, better known in Namibia as the Tok Tokkie. Its footsteps form a pattern that cross all kind of terrain, from grasslands to the sandy dunes. What better way to explore the Namib then by following its footsteps? The Tok Tokkie Trail takes you close to the desert’s stunning beauty. Whilst walking, you will discover many secrets of the Namib that cannot be experienced when driving and you will get to feel different aspects of the desert – from mountainous terrain to sandy dunes. Let your experienced guide explain all this to you, relax with a sun downer and enjoy a three-course dinner before falling asleep under the stars…

This optional two-night guided walking trail can be booked in addition to, or instead of, the two-night stay in Wolwedans. Distances do not exceed 10 km daily. Meals and drinks are included and you sleep on comfortable camp beds under the starry skies each night. The trail can only be walked in the cooler winter months – May to September.

Mysterious fairy circles

In other months, or if walking is not your thing, you can go on game drives to discover this wonderful nature reserve. The camps offer scenic drives in open 4×4 safari vehicles accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. You’ll explore the different landscapes and the wildlife that calls this home. One of these landscapes are the mysterious fairy circles of the Namib desert. Thousands and thousands of mysterious circles gaze unblinkingly up in space. They truly are a mystery, because they are only found in a remote area flanking the red sands of the Namib Desert. They are between 2 and 15 meters in diameter and all are guarded by a circle of knee-high grass, much higher than the surrounding vegetation. Inside this narrow border lies an almost perfect circle of yellow or red sand. You can read more about them in our blog: ‘Where fairies dance and dragons sleep’.

Hot air ballooning

If you do only one hot air ballooning trip in your life, this (or Sossusvlei) is the place. Almost perfect weather conditions the whole year round, the most beautiful desert landscape in the world with plains, fairy circles, mountain ranges and the vast expense of the highest sand dunes in the world make this an unforgettable experience. A champagne breakfast in the desert rounds out this experience-of-a-lifetime!

Day 12-13 Sossusvlei: the highest dunes in the world

Sossusvlei is where you will find the iconic red sand dunes of the Namib. The clear blue skies contrast with the giant red dunes to make this one of the most scenic natural wonders of Africa. Its unique, ever shifting dunes rise to almost 400 metres – making them some of the highest in the world. These iconic dunes come alive in morning and evening light. Sossusvlei is home to a variety of desert wildlife including oryx, springbok, ostrich and a variety of reptiles. You have spectacular views from the deck of your lodge at the edge of the dunes.

The next day you drive far into the dunes. You can climb ‘Big Daddy’, one of Sossusvlei’s tallest dunes. Explore Deadvlei, a white, salt, claypan dotted with 900 years old, dead trees against a background or red sand dunes and a photographer’s heaven.

Sesriem Canyon

Sossusvlei is part of the Namib Naukluft NP. Naukluft is German for ‘narrow gorge’, and nowhere is this better illustrated as in the Sesriem Canyon. This deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.

Last but not least, this is the other place (besides Wolwedans) perfect for a hot air ballooning trip. Ballooning from here you will see more of the sand dunes, less of the fairy circles and other desert landscapes. Either is an incredible experience, so it’s all up to your personal preference.

Day 14 A Wine farm in the Kalahari

Along the winding gravel roads, sample the famous Moose’s apple pie in Solitaire and enjoy the beautiful mountain passes taking you back to the highlands. At the foot of the Naukluft Mountains, Neuras is a 14,500-hectare oasis that boasts natural fresh water fountains. It is here where ecotourism is combined with wine-making and wildlife conservation. The lodge runs on solar power and wine farming is done with minimal impact on the environment.

Join a guided walk through the vineyards and visit the natural water springs and lush palm trees. Along the way learning about the origin and history of the farm as well as the yearly management of the vines. Once at the wine cellar, a full explanation of the wine production from start to finish is given to provide you a real insight into how wines are made in the desert. This is topped off with a full tasting of the Neuras wines with the accompaniment of a cheese board at the lodge restaurant.

At the end of the day you have a sundowner drive. Enjoy a scenic drive through the Honey Canyon, stopping along the way for any photo opportunities of the beautiful landscape and plant life. End with drinks of your choice and a snack platter at a perfect location while watching the sun go down. What a way to explore the wild Kalahari Desert until the very last moment!

Day 15 Windhoek

In the morning you can participate in the Cheetah Experience. Neuras is home to 7 cheetahs who were brought there to live out the rest of their life in the most natural way possible after being rescued from conflict situations. You have the opportunity to witness these wild creatures in their 35 hectare enclosure and learn about their history, their behaviour and why these cats are so precious to Namibia and the struggles they face to stay alive in the wild. Afterwards you return to Windhoek. You spend the last night once again in Na’an Ku Se, close to the airport and in an area that looked brown when you arrived, but green now after the desert.

Day 16 Return home

A short drive takes you to the international airport of Windhoek. You will leave this incredible country, forever carrying the knowledge how to explore the wild Kalahari Desert in your heart.

Your comfortable guesthouse in Sea Point is close to restaurants, bars and other facilities. The guesthouse is Fair Trade certified and you will find this back in all the small details that make your stay more than just a hotel overnight. After settling in, get your first taste of the city when going on a sunset champagne cruise. Stunning views of the city sprawled at the foot of Table Mountain and the spectacular sunset in the Atlantic Ocean make this a treat you won’t easily forget. 

You’ll see Cape Town’s highlights, but you’ll see it from a very different angle. Start the day with a scootour, riding down Table Mountain in a completely clean self-propelled way. Gravity does all the work and you only need to break where necessary. Look down on Cape Town and the colourful Bo-Kaap, which you will explore afterwards.

Eyepopping kaleidoscope

The Bo-Kaap is an eyepopping kaleidoscope of brightly coloured houses, spice shops and mosques, smothered in a thick layer of Cape Malay tradition. Your host will take you to the most scenic spots in the Bo-Kaap, ending up at her home. There she will initiate you into the secrets of the famous Cape Malay cuisine. She’ll teach you hands-on how to make delicacies like samosas, a curry, naans, and a sambal. You are in effect cooking your own lunch… and you get her secret recipes to take home.

After this delicious lunch you visit the incredible Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, in short Zeitz Mocaa. An old grain silo in the Victoria Waterfront has been transformed into one of the must-see museums of the world.  A mix of rotating temporaray collections, the permanent art work and incredible views of the harbor, town and Table Mountain makes for a wonderful afternoon.

The long and winding road to the Cape

The Cape of Good Hope must be the world’s most famous cape. This is the most south western point of Africa. Here the famous Flying Dutchman harassed ships of old that rounded the Cape on their way to the far East. There are many ways to explore the Cape by car, but why not step outside the normal boundaries and make it an unforgettable experience by going by water bike and sidecar?

On the way to the Cape, Simonstown is famous for its penguins. Unlikely as it may seem, thanks to the cold Antarctic water penguins thrive here. Simonstown has one of the largest colonies and they live in the town itself.  Go out on the water on a water bike and pedal past seals and penguins in their natural habitat, going in and out of the sea. And no, you don’t need to be a sports fanatic to enjoy this leisurely paddle.

The winding roads to the Cape Point are made for motorbikes, and a sidecar ride for the rest of the day adds a lot to the fun. Each motorbike comes with a driver/guide and all the gear you need to look like a black-and-white movie star.  You’ll ride past all famous landmarks, including Cape Point National Park, the Cape of Good Hope itself, the lighthouses and of course Chapman’s Peak Drive. This was recently voted (again) as one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world.

Don’t want a side car ride? You can do all of this in your own car or with a private guided chauffeur-driven excursion too. 

Explore the Mother City – your way

Your last day in Cape Town is free for you to fill in with whatever you like. Cape Town is amazing and there is so much to do and to see that the choice will be hard. You’d need at least another week to do it all, so let’s help you by giving you some of our own favorite secrets of Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Like what you see? Like walking? The most beautiful walk you can do starts in the botanical gardens of Kirstenbosch and takes you across the Table Mountain to the cable car. Once on top you walk along the edge of Table Mountain with stunning views of the Cape Flats. You then cross the mountain to the other side where the cable car station is. Despite its name and the way it looks from afar, the mountain is definitely not flat on top. Sloping hills, gorges and steep climbs crisscross the mountain, making it a beautiful traverse.  We offer this only as a guided walk.

Do you prefer street art and township culture? Then spend a day starting with the street art tour in fashionable Woodstock and Salt River. Here are over 120 street art murals and graffiti paintings. Artists from South Africa and around the world adorned the facades of over 120 buildings in an extraordinary display of artistic self-expression and empowering messaging.  After this you are transferred to one of the townships where Uthando (meaning love) is operating. Beer and bicycles in the wine town

After the secrets of Cape Town it’s time to move to the secrets of Stellenbosch. A first discovery of the historic town with a lunch of delectable specialty meats, crepes, baked goods, craft beer, coffee, fresh Saldanha Bay oysters. Situated at a cherished 18th century historical building at the heart Stellenbosch’s vibrant cultural district, it gives home to a collective of diverse merchants, each passionate about their craft.

Visit a brewery on a working farm and learn all about the beer making processes which are still done by hand here.

Explore one of the cycle trails around Stellenbosch. Rental of the bikes is done by a fund that contributes to the local community.

Day 3 Spitzkoppen Lodge, Spitzkoppe

The scenic Namib Desert is the most spectacular part of the Kalahari Desert. Here an absolute highlight is the Spitzkoppe (‘pointed mountains’), a group of bald granite peaks forming one of Namibia’s most recognizable and dramatic landmarks. These enormous, towering domes look barren, but since ancient times this was the home of the San. They left an astonishing amount of rock paintings. In the afternoon you’ll visit the most spectacular of these paintings.

The lodge is situated on the northern periphery of the Spitzkoppe inselberg, between huge granite boulders, . These were created more than 150 million years ago, with breathtaking views onto the Brandberg and Erongo Mountains.

Day 4 – 5 Swakopmund: life between desert and sea

From the desert to the sea: along Namibia’s spectacularly scenic coast lies the quirky seaside town of Swakopmund. It is known for its wide-open avenues, colonial architecture, and its surrounding otherworldly desert terrain. Swakopmund is often described as being more German than Germany. If you go to a typical Konditorei (German for cake bakery), you can find amazing Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte and Apfelkuchen.

A freezingly cold ocean and a desert sound like the recipe for a desolate, barren area. Nothing is further away from the truth! Swakopmund epitomizes the rich life between the desert and the sea. In the morning, you will go on a Fat Bike tour. A Fat Bike has very thick and wide tyres to enable you to ride on sand. The tour starts off by riding down memory lane, passing some of Swakopmund’s historic buildings and landmarks to give the visitor a feel of how the charming town started.

The living desert

Then you head off into the dunes to take in the breath-taking scenery of the oldest desert in the world in a fully ecological way without noise or air pollution. You can even cycle up and down Namibia’s famous dunes. From here you can enjoy once in a lifetime views of desert, sea and Swakopmund. If you are not up to cycling, you can join a Living Desert Tour, where you will explore the Namib Desert and discover its wealth of fauna and flora. Expect sightings of sidewinder snakes, white lady spiders, Namaqua chameleons, dancing lizards and much more.

In the afternoon, you go to the Walvis Bay Lagoon, home to a huge variety of birds, plankton species, fish life, dolphins and even sometimes whales. You go out on a sea-kayak to visit the Pelican Point seal colony with a population between 15’000 and 20’000 Cape Fur Seals.  These seals have no natural predators in the water and are keen to approach the kayaks. Or make a cruise if you prefer not to peddle.

End the day in the famous Brewer & Butcher restaurant. It boasts a Micro-brewery, Beer Garden, Restaurant, Bar, Lounge with an open fireplace, a sea-facing terrace with two “Boma” fire pits and a fireplace. 

Day 6 – 7 The dangerous beauty of Skeleton Coast

The Skeleton Coast is known as the ‘Land God Made in Anger’ and is remoteness at its best. Thousands of miles of sandy desert dotted with shipwrecks meet with the cold waters of the Atlantic. Somehow, an amazing array of wildlife and flora manages to survive in this harsh but beautiful environment. Imagine hundreds and hundreds of kilometres of empty sandy coast, bordered by endless dunes and littered with scattered shipwrecks. The road is smooth as tar but built with salt.

Here you find an exclusive retreat: Shipwreck Lodge. The shipwreck-shaped chalets are nestled between the dunes with a view of the Atlantic Ocean, where the cold Benguela current provides guests with a refreshing breeze. Wildlife along the sea

Ocean fog creeps over the shoreline caused by the warm, dry air of the Namib Desert colliding with the cold Benguela current. This otherworldly area is home to a diversity of wildlife, including seabird colonies, Cape fur seals, zebra, gemsbok, desert-adapted elephant, lion and much more. This coast is desolate but breathtakingly beautiful.

Visit the bustling Seal Colony, go sandboarding and enjoy a scrumptious lunch on the vast empty beach. Then ponder the meaning of life as the ocean washes onto the pristine sand in its unending ebb and flow and end the day with a sundowner drive to the Roaring Dunes, where the desert’s voice can be heard. Watch the sun disappear into the Atlantic Ocean. 

Day 8 – 9 Desert Elephants and Himbas

You start the day with a very adventurous drive up a track along the Hoarusib River under the guidance of a vehicle and guide from the lodge. Perched on a hill above the banks of the ephemeral Hoarusib River, the Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is possibly one of the most remote lodges in Namibia. If you make it here, you will be rewarded with a genuine safari experience.

The lodge will dazzle your senses with its mix of stylish tranquillity, eccentric architecture, ultimate comfort and excellent service. Ethnic and local sculptured furnishing bring the excitement and romance of Africa to life. An oasis of luxury in the middle of the desert.

Tracking the famous desert elephants

This remote area, deep in the heart of the Kaokoland wilderness, is home to an array of unique desert-adapted wildlife. These include the famous Desert Elephant, Desert Lion, Black Rhino and Giraffe. You go out a full day on specifically desert-equipped safari vehicles to look for the rare herd of desert-adapted elephants, some of the most scenic endemic species that populate this region. A family of Black Rhino also roams the area, as well as stunning towers of giraffes, jumping springboks, kudus, birds and a wide variety of big and small wildlife. And you might encounter the weirdest plant of them all. The bizarre Welwitschia can live up to 2,000 years old, but only consists of one root stem and two leaves. Wind and age make these leaves split and wind around themselves, making it one of nature’s most fascinating sculptures!

The Himba, people of the desert

Your guides are 100% locals with a lifetime of experience in the location: they are true Himbas, heirs of ancient desert tribes knowledge. They bring in their priceless knowledge of nature and animals for an experience that is a true encounter rather than just another “drive”.

They live in a nearby authentic Himba village. The village is the home of many relatives of the guides and staff members who still live with the ancient traditional style of the pre-technological era. The unique experience of your guide can ensure a true and deep dive into the local culture, which is far from what travellers can usually expect elsewhere.

Day 10 – 11 Tracking the elusive Black Rhino

Palmwag is named after the palm trees that line the (usually empty) river bed that borders the stunning Etendeka Plateau. The reserve is home to the largest population of southwestern black rhinos in Africa. Animal lovers can also get a peek at leopard, lion, cheetah, mountain zebra, Angolan giraffe, springbok, kudu, and African bush elephant. The comfortable Grootberg Lodge is wholly owned by the local community, and the continued conservation efforts have resulted in wildlife numbers growing in this conservancy.

Leaving early in the morning will be forgiven by the extraordinary experience: rhino tracking. The tracking is done by foot, with a supporting vehicle. The ranger will look for footprints and clues to track the elusive rhino in all safety: reaching them by downwind to avoid being spotted by these giants. A beautiful drive back to the Lodge will ensure the pleasure to dive into the pool before doing one of the other activities.

In the afternoon you can go on a scenic drive on top of the plateau. Experience various wildlife sightings, including zebra, antelope, jackal, springbok, kudu and oryx and occasionally leopard and lion.

Day 12 Discover the wild west of Etosha NP

Etosha West is a new, still undiscovered addition to this world-famous wildlife sanctuary. Explore the magnificent scenery of this remote north Namibian landscape. The area boasts numerous waterholes attracting elephants, rhino, leopards, lions, and a variety of bucks. Hobatere means “Find me”, and once you do, you will enjoy a warm welcome and personalized service. Because it is a private concession, today, you can make a unique night drive. Many nocturnal animals, such as aardvark, cape fox, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, genet and many more, can only be encountered on a night drive.

The concession area is home to a wide selection of game. Think lion, leopard, oryx, eland, cheetah, aardvark, giraffe, Hartmann’s mountain zebra and elephant. The exclusive lodge belongs to the #Khoadi //Hoas Conservancy. One of the primary objectives of the lodge is to increase the benefits to the local community, reducing human-wildlife conflict and conservation of the area.

Day 13 Central Etosha

You’ll spend the whole day game driving through the bushy Western part of Etosha to the open central part. Etosha National Park is one of the top 5 African Game Reserves and offers a premier game viewing experience. The park’s diverse vegetation ranges from dense bush to open plains attracting a variety of wildlife. In the heart of the park is the Etosha Pan – a shallow depression that covers an area of 5000 square kilometres. Dry and shimmering for most of the year, the pans fill up with water after seasonal rains, making it the perfect habitat for wildlife.

In the dry season, the wildlife is attracted to the perennial springs and waterholes that make Etosha unique. Where in other areas you drive around looking for game, in Etosha, you travel from waterhole to waterhole. Etosha is home to a variety of large mammals such as lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, zebra, giraffe and a diversity of birdlife such as flamingos and pelicans. And you’ll see a lot of these!

Day 14 – 15 East Etosha, Onguma Game Reserve

Another full day game driving takes you through the eastern part of Etosha to one of Namibia’s best-kept secrets: Onguma Game Reserve. The reserve offers you the opportunity to experience Africa in all her beauty and diversity. It features over 34000 hectares of protected land scattered with a variety of wildlife. Plains game, black rhino, kudu, giraffe, zebra, lion, cheetah, leopard and more than 300 bird species call this home. The seasonal rains attract thousands of migrating birds to the Fisher’s Pan wetland area.

You sleep in a stunningly beautiful Tented Camp, where the large luxurious safari tents evoke thoughts of an era long gone by. In the local Herero language, Onguma means “the place you don’t want to leave.” With a stunning main building and seven tents providing private, exclusive accommodation, Onguma Tented Camp certainly lives up to that name. Like the bush where soft air blows against sharp thorns, Onguma Tented Camp is a study in contrasts. Textures such as stone, suede, linen and steel create a setting that is sleek and modern but also inherently of the earth.

Today’s game viewing is not only done by game drives but also from a new water-level hide where the animals tower literally just meters away above you. Because the animals don’t know you are there, you will get a unique insight into their natural behaviour. This is truly a place you don’t want to leave!

Day 16 Okonjima Nature Reserve

Midway between the spectacular Etosha National Park and the capital city of Windhoek lies the well-known Okonjima Nature Reserve. This is home to AfriCAT, a carnivore sanctuary, which gives the captive cats a second chance to be released back into the wild. Here they become completely independent hunters in a protected area right in the middle of commercial cattle farmland. Enjoy thrilling cat tracking guided safaris, leopard-spotting, and off-road night drives to end your safari in Namibia in style.

Day 17 Return home

A short drive takes you to the international airport of Windhoek. Undoubtedly, the hustle and bustle of modern life will make you long for more of the unforgettable life on the wild side that you have experienced these weeks.

Marataba conservation area

Marataba, a 21,000-hectare (52,000-acre), privately managed section of the Marakele National Park, is uniquely situated where lush bushveld gives way to the Kalahari sands, in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. A contractual National Park, Marataba is one of South Africa’s most innovative conservation models. From the vision of an iconic president to the unique public-private partnership that exists today, we protect the area’s diverse flora and fauna through modern and hands-on conservation practices.

The Rhino Conservation Experience

Marataba offers fully interactive rhino safaris for guests to get involved over three days in elective procedures like rhino notching, collaring and/or DNA collecting. This experience is only available from 1 February to 31 October.

Notching is an ongoing intervention at Marataba and the long-term objective is to identify every single rhino in the Reserve. This will ensure that annually they are only required to notch the younger animals that are dispersing from their mothers.

Animals are individually located and immobilised (a tranquilising dart is shot by a professional veterinary team) from a helicopter. Once immobilised, the animal is moved into a comfortable position. Then, notches are incised into the ears, under anaesthetic, and microchips are inserted into the horns and the body.

The tissue removed from excising the notches is collected and the DNA, now correlated to the microchips, is submitted to the RHoDIS database (Rhinoceros DNA indexing system). RHoDIS is a national DNA database maintained by the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the University of Pretoria and is kept to provide forensic evidence related to the provenance of confiscated rhinoceros horns.

Get actively involved

You will not be a passive visitor during this! No, you will be part of the team and help hands-on with any work that needs doing. The Vet will direct you what to do. Your itinerary will generally look like this:

Day 1: After a briefing with the conservation team, embark on an afternoon drive to identify a specific rhino and learn about the social interaction and make up of rhino groups.

Day 2: Darting, notching & monitoring of the rhino. A follow up and post-notching monitoring will take place in the afternoon.

Day 3: Alternative day for notching, or to enjoy a selection of other conservation experiences.

Day 4: Departure.

Marataba is one of South Africa’s biodiversity hotspots. The area is not only rich in its diversity of wildlife and flora, the magnificent landscapes provide an unforgettable and everchanging backdrop to all activities. Enjoy game drives by safari vehicle or boat and mix and match them with more interactive experiences for a full immersion into the Marataba way of life.

Every booking is allocated a private conservation guide and vehicle to allow for maximum flexibility. Experiences on day 3 can be chosen on a ‘mix and match’ basis for a fully tailor-made stay. Besides the normal safari activities like game drives and game walks, you can choose to participate in camera trap setup and analysis, game census logging and compiling of ID kits. Or a telemetry tracking walk of cheetahs, community outreach programs and further opportunities. Get involved in specialised experiences with the conservation team and get an unique look behind the scenes of a game reserve.

The Conservation Camps

Founders Camp and Explorers Camp are about enriching experiences in balance with nature and immersing yourself in the solitude of the vast, wild landscapes…

Founders Camp is a lodged camp and has 4 suites for up to 8 adults & 2 children and you book the whole camp. The base rate is for 4 adults (except during Rhino Conservation Week). You get your own vehicle and guide. Children of all ages are welcome.

Explorers Camp is a tented camp and has 5 tents & 1 family tent for up to 12 adults & 6 children. This is set up for a maximum of two groups of 6 adults plus children. The base rate is for 4 adults (except during Rhino Conservation Week). Each group gets its own vehicle and guide. Children of all ages are welcome.

A night on the wild side

Want to disconnect from the modern world completely and reconnect with nature? Change one night for a night in the Star Camp Out. The Star Camp Out experience is focused on stargazing and wild walking. There are beautiful mountains and gorges to explore around camp.

Four spacious tents are equipped with 2 stretchers and luxury bedding. The bucket-showered bathroom is at the back of the tent but is not accessible from inside. At the main camp area, there is a large stretch tent covering a comfortable chill out zone, as well as a small bar and an outdoor firepit. There are plenty of places to relax and put your feet up at the end of the day – and plenty of ice for a G&T!

Light is provided by paraffin lantern. There is no electricity and no mobile phone reception. The entire camp is extremely light impact, leaving no footprint behind on the landscape.

Food at the Star Camp Out is wholesome and hearty – and there is lots of it! Everything is cooked over the campfire, so expect honest South African flavours with a good dose of fun.

You can do this tour with your own transport, or we can arrange transfers for you. Choose between a road or fly-in transfer. The airstrip is ca. 45 minutes from the camps.

The beauty of the bay

Riding a side car over stunning Chapman’s Peak?

After a leisurely breakfast you go to your next destination: a wonderful hotel on top of Boulders Beach, the famous beach where the penguins nest. 

The journey takes you along Chapman’s Peak, voted one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives. A whopping 114 curves take you along steep cliffs and along cut-outs in the rocks, with plenty of viewpoints to take in the stunning views over the ocean. If you’re lucky, you’ll even spot whales coming close to the shore.

You can do this drive with your own car or we can arrange a transfer for you. One of the most fun ways to do this transfer is by side car. This will pick you up at your hotel and take you on a scenic ride over Chapman’s Peak and past some other sights before you reach your hotel in Simonstown. Helmets and coats are provided, you only need to bring good cheer! 

A true gem on False Bay

Tintswalo at Boulders Manor is located in Cape Town’s charming suburbs of Simonstown. Surrounded by fynbos and with unobstructed views over False Bay and across Boulders Beach and its internationally famous colony of endangered African penguins, it’s truly a gem.

Upon arrival you are served a light lunch.  These days are filled with your other Marine Experiences inspired by ‘My Octopus Teacher’. First you go over the water by kayak, later you go under water to snorkel in the kelp forests where ‘My Octopus Teacher’ was shot. The last Experience takes place on the edge of land and water when visiting the penguins.

When and at what time these experiences take place will depend on how the weather and the tides are. Upon arrival, you will be informed on what day and at what time each activity will take place.  

On the water: Sea Kayaking with penguins

Usually, your first experience is today in the afternoon. You will visit the penguins in a unique way: by kayak. This guided tour is with very stable double kayaks. Paddle the waters of False Bay along the shore to the penguins at Boulders Beach. No experience is required and reasonably fit, able-bodied people can do it. You start in the harbour and will paddle out past the civilian and Naval Harbours, where you get a bonus close up view of the naval vessels and then to the penguins. On the way you often encounter a number of seals.  

You will be given a thorough safety briefing before heading out into the beautiful False Bay to view our endangered African Penguins swimming out to their fishing grounds. Shark Warrior Adventure Centre is a responsible Tourism initiative and funds generated through their guided sea kayak, stand up paddling, snorkeling and penguin walks are used to fund conservation projects.

Under water Marine Experiences inspired by ‘My Octopus Teacher’

The next Marine Experience is snorkelling in the kelp forests of False Bay. You too can adventure into the ocean where Craig Foster spent thousands of hours filming his personal encounters with an octopus. Entering this mysterious underwater world is an exhilarating experience that will leave you in sheer awe of our beautifully tranquil marine ecosystem. Snorkel in unexplored areas where fish dance in the flow of the currents in painted reefs, and swaying kelp and marine life all move at a snail’s pace. After your return you can enjoy an extensive Brunch. 

Where land and water meet

The last of the Marine Experiences inspired by ‘My Octopus Teacher’ takes place where land and water meet. You can plan this whenever you want. Walk along the beach between the penguins that have made this place home. Boulders and it’s surrounding beaches form part of the Table Mountain Marina protected area, thus ensuring the beaches are safe and clean and the penguins are protected. Summer is prime time to visit Boulders and that is when you see the most Penguin action. However, you can see Penguins throughout the year. Between September and October, they spend much time feeding out at sea so there are fewer Penguins on the beach. The birds are most active early in the morning or late afternoon. Incredible conservation eff orts have grown the colony to over 2,200 birds in recent years.

Quaint wonderful Simonstown

All Marine Experiences take about 2 hours long, so there is plenty of time left to explore the quaint and colourful centre of Simonstown. This is within walking distance. Learn about Just Nuisance, the only dog ever to have a rank in the South African Navy. As the story goes, he always accompanied the sailors to town and took care that however drunk they were, they boarded the train back safely. However, the railways did not allow stray dogs on the trains and threatened to ban him. The solution? Make him an official sailor, who were allowed to ride the trains for free. 

Other places to take in are the Naval Museum and looking out over the Naval Base. For the grown-up kids-at-heart, the Toy Museum is a must.

You can’t miss the Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout Museum – dedicated to this lady who had such an influence on Apartheid-politics through her angle of humoristic criticism. It is part of Evita’s Perron, founded by Tannie Evita and recently featured on the tv show ‘In die Sop’. In one episode famous chef Bertus Basson redesigned the restaurant and the menu. You’re in for treat!

Hidden Gems along the Garden Route

The garden route has much to offer for the adventurous type. The Tsitsikamma area, with its deep gorges and towering trees, is a treasure trove of adrenaline pursuits that include bungee-jumping from Bloukrans Bridge, gliding through the treetops or above waterfalls on a series of ziplines (cable slides), abseiling the steep cliffs, and tubing through the Storms River Gorge.

Next stop: the famous Knysna Heads, dividing the roaring Ocean from the tranquil Knysna Lagoon. Discover the Garden Route differently: make a Scootour in the oldest Fynbos forest, canoe on the lagoon or go sailing on the ocean, looking for whales and dolphins.

Back down the Garden Route towards the De Hoop Nature reserve, you’ll find the best views of the ocean you’ve ever seen. Go on a walk through the reserve and see the beautiful fauna and flora or take a guided tour along the beach, looking for life in the many tidal pools. During the whale season, you can regularly spot these immense mammals close to shore.

Food and wine

Between the mountains lies Stellenbosch, the heart of the wine area. You sleep 3 nights on a sustainably working wine farm. You can make a Segway tour between the vineyards to learn how they grow their wines, recycle their water and many more things. Order a picnic basket and sit on the beautiful lawns, enjoying pâté’s, cheeses, freshly baked bread and all kind of goodies, accompanied by a bottle of their excellent wine of course.

In Stellenbosch you’ll go on a city tour with a culinary twist: you’ll walk around the town seeing the historical side, but also visit different restaurants where they serve typical traditional South African bites and plates. A lovely and very tasty experience!
